Engineering Newsletter - June, 2006

In the June NEWSLETTER we will discuss a "GREEN ROOF". A waterproof membrane, soil and vegetation are installed as the roof of a structure to reduce the impact of rainwater runoff and enhance insulation properties within the building. Green roof technology is as old as 500 BC in Europe and have been seen in the United States since the 1930’s.

The roof is made of layers of man made and natural materials. The base layers provide a waterproof seal for the roof and lays a foundation for the soils and plants. A stainless steel batten and biodegradable wind mesh hold soils in place while a combination of shallow rooted plantings and a thermoplastic root barrier protects the underlying waterproof system. The system reduces run of by 2/3 and requires no watering, just rainfall.

June Humor:

Why is the pole that you won’t touch somebody with always TEN FEET long? It comes from the pole rivermen used to push off of obstructions or muddy bottoms. It became a standard measure and was used to indicate being that far away from an obstruction.

Did you hear about the telephone operator who was committed to an asylum…They said he had too many hang ups.

What do you get if you cross a pit bull with a collie? A dog that runs for help…after it bites your leg off.

Smartest dog: Border Collie. Dumbest dog: Afgan
