Engineering Newsletter - May, 2006

In the May NEWSLETTER we will discuss storm water filtration using CHECK DAMS. A check dam is a barrier made out of stone installed across the width of a ditch in an excavated trench with raised end elevations to prevent flow around the barrier that will protect the ditch from erosion and will filter sediment from the flow. The dam may be used for areas that are between 2 and 5 acres of disturbed land and shall be left operational until 70% grass cover is achieved on the property. Areas less can be protected utilizing a fabric barrier only. Areas more than 5 acres will need sediment basin in conjunction with the check dam.

Check dams are constructed out of 4 to 8 inch diameter stone, placed so that it covers the width of the channel. The top of the center of the check dam will be 6 inched lower than the outer edges so water will flow across the center and not around the ends. The height of the check dam will be no higher than 3 feet. You may have multiple dams if the slope of the ditch exceeds 5%. Spacing will depend on flow and design height of the check dams. Check with your design Professional for proper check dam design.
