Engineering Newsletter - September, 2005

In the SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER we will discuss four landscape plants that have been readily used in sloped areas to reduce erosion of soil. Pachysandra Terminalis with small white flowers in spring has been used in shallow sloped area but is prone to wilt and will spread slowly. Vinca Minor commonly called Periwinkle, has lavender flower in spring is more hardy that Pachysandra and once established, need little care. Both of the above give tailored looking slope protection but will need watering care.

Two additional ground covers spread quickly and need minimal care. Hedera Helix, English Ivy, and other Hedera types and Coronilla Varia, Crown Vetch, are widely used in the Northeast Ohio area. A number of government agencies specify Coronilla because of its ability to spread quickly and maintain its growth over winter seasons. The plant has fern like leaves and clusters of pink and white flowers. It forms a dense mat on any type of soil with deep roots that create an erosion resistant matrix.

Humor of the Month:

-A Doctor, a Civil Engineer and a Politician were arguing about what was the profession of God. The Doctor remarked," In God’s book, the Bible, it says that God created Eve from the rib of Adam. This clearly required surgery, so I contend God was a Doctor. The Civil Engineer said "But you can look even earlier in the Bible to the book of Genesis, where it states that God created the order of the heavens and the earth out of chaos." This was the first and certainly the most spectacular application of Civil Engineering. Therefore God was a Civil Engineer. The Politician smiled and said" And who do you think created the chaos?"
