Engineering Newsletter - August, 2005

In the AUGUST NEWSLETTER we will describe changes going on in the Survey field with the utilization of GPS, Global Positioning System. You maybe familiar with GPS use in cars and cell phones to locate where the user is in relation to a desired restaurant location or the nearest gas station but this technology is being used selectively more and more in field location by Surveyors when large areas are involved. It requires judgement by the project manager to determine if the application warrants the use of GPS and whether single or dual frequency transmitters are needed.

GPS is funded, maintained and controlled by the US Dept. of Defense and was designed to be used by the military. Each GSP receiver utilizes four GPS satellites to compute position, velocity and time. The satellites are adjusted to compensate for the relativity change in time do to their altitude and velocity, thanks Albert.

With the experience Surveyors of McSteen & Associates we will be able to determine if your project can be better designed with the use of GPS. The GPS system can be a good tool utilized by a trainer surveyor but is not always the best way to complete your project. Let the trainer experienced Professional Surveyors at McSteen & Associates guide you.

"Do you wish to check the raccoons as luggage?" He asked. "No, thanks" replied the vultures. "They’re carrion."
