In the DECEMBER NEWSLETTER we will discuss a little known fire fact. In the early years of our Republic the most popular insurance for the common man was fire insurance. The first fire insurance company was organized in 1752 and owned by Benjamin Franklin of kite flying fame. The fire insurance company not only insured against fire loses but also owner and operated the fire department. When a fire was reported the fire fighters would look to see if the building had a fire marker attached to the side of the building usually the second floor area, streetside. This metal identification marker stated the fire fighter’s company insured the building. If the building had the marker the firefighters would try to put out the fire, if not the fire fighter would do nothing.
