Engineering Newsletter - October, 2005

In the OCTOBER NEWSLETTER we will discuss underground storage tanks (UST). U S Epa has estimated there are over 4 million existing UST in the US storing petroleum or hazardous materials with about 10% leaking. Regulations have been set up in Subpart A of Part 280 of the Code of Federal Regukations, and in State and Local Codes. These regulations govern a tank or combination of tanks and connecting piping having at least 10% of the combined volume underground. There are exceptions that allow some types of tanks to be unregulated and a determination must be made to tell if your tank is regulated. There are also like regulations for tanks above ground therefore simple digging the tank up is not the answer.

If your tank is regulated you would be reponsible to have it registered with the appropriate reulatory agency, meet all leak suppression measures outlines, has proof of financial responsibility, perform scheduled site checks, maintain records and have regulatory checks performed as stated in the statutes.

Humor of the Month:

  • Moses Alexander, 93, married Frances Tompkins, 105, on June 11, 1831, in Bath New York. The next morning both were found dead in bed.
  • In 1880 when the western border was being drawn for South Dakota the two surveyors, one starting north working south and one starting south working north, missed each other by about a mile. The jog in the line can be seen where the South Dakota border meets Montana and Wyoming.

There seems to be a banking crisis in Japan. We hear the Origami Bank has folded, Sumo Bank has gone belly up, Bonsai Bank is planning to cut back some of its branches, Kamikaze Bank has taken a nose dive, the Karaoke Bank can be bought for a song and the Sushi Bank will be cutting staff who feel they are getting a raw deal.
